On the sidelines of the 60th session of the Human Rights Council, Maat Foundation, in partnership with the Economic, Social and Cultural Council of the African Union, and the Independent Commission for Human Rights in North aAfrica, the Sahara Observatory, andUN NGO Major GroupA side event entitled “Towards Sustainable Human Development in Africa: Social Inclusion, Reducing Inequalities, and Enhancing Local Dynamics.”
Ayman Aqeel, Vice President of the African Union Commission on Sustainable Development (Ecosoc), addressed the role of civil society in promoting development in Africa, noting that Agenda 2063 is still off track due to the funding gap and challenges facing civil society organizations.
Aqeel recommended the necessity of Recognizing the role of civil society organizations in policy-making, accountability, oversight, and monitoring, halting arbitrary measures against them, and ensuring their equitable access to funding sources locally, regionally, and internationally.
