Okeil: Recovery of United Nations and Improving Its Efficiency Is a Shared Responsibility

Maat believes that the Secretary-General's initiative, launched in conjunction with the 80th anniversary of the UN, represents an opportunity that everyone should embrace to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the international organization. Maat asserts that this efficiency can only be achieved by addressing the liquidity crisis caused by member states' failure to pay their assessed contributions on time. Increasing community participation in UN activities will also have a positive impact on the organization's work.

Maat supports most of the ambitious goals set by the Secretary-General within his initiative and hopes that member states will present practical proposals to support the reform process led by the Secretary-General, as well as positively vote on the proposals submitted to General Assembly. In this context, Ayman Okeil, Chairman of Maat for Peace, Development, and Human Rights, stated that the establishment of the United Nations was a result of the end of World War II, a conflict that brought indescribable sorrow to humanity. The desire to save future generations from similar wars was a driving force behind the creation of an organization to maintain international peace and security, achieve development, and respect human rights; objectives that can only be realized if the UN Charter is respected and if member states recognize that peace is the only guarantee for the prosperity and development of societies. Okeil added that it is unfortunate that the 80th anniversary of UN comes at a time when the sounds of guns and artillery drown out dialogue and diplomacy, and conflicts are escalating rather than being resolved. Terrorists are contemplating a return to areas they previously lost, and hate speech is on the rise. Only 15% of the Sustainable Development Goals are on track, and misinformation is spreading like wildfire. Okeil emphasized that the recovery of United Nations and improving its efficiency is a shared responsibility. Secretary-General's initiative is a commendable gesture that could lead to UN reform if it receives acceptance from member states. Ultimately, Maat believes that reforming UN is preferable to dismantling or reshaping it according to the whims of certain countries.
