Pasha: Facing terrorism on the continent does not have to be limited to the security aspect only

The Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights issued its second report on the most prominent terrorist operations that the African continent witnessed in the month of March 2020, to track the course of terrorist groups and come up with recommendations and estimates of the current and future security situation in the African continent, at a time when Africans are struggling with the epidemic and terrorism to obtain On their right to life.

And after the African continent crossed the barrier of 170 deaths and thousands of infections this month as a result of the Corona virus, terrorist groups did not hesitate to carry out their actions. The second report of the "Lens of Terrorist Operations in Africa" dealt with the details of the most prominent of those operations that took place in March in each of the five regions of the continent, which occurred in 11 African countries, with 20 terrorist attacks, and caused the death of at least 353 people. While Boko Haram was at the forefront of the groups that caused the largest numbers of victims.

The report stated that the most affected region is West Africa, where the death rate in the region was about 91.23% of the month's deaths on the continent, with a total of 322 civilian deaths. Nigeria was ranked first in terms of the countries most affected, with 132 victims, after four terrorist operations. While the State of Somalia came in the forefront of countries that were able to target terrorists, with 149 terrorist elements.

Ayman Akil, President of the Maat Foundation, stated that the West African region still needs more attention to increase the security capabilities to confront terrorism by international and regional organizations. Aqil stressed the need to legalize any aid from countries outside the continent within an institutional framework, noting the need to define the tasks of the “Tacuba” forces, which France announced at the end of this month with a number of its European and African allies, to fight terrorist groups side by side with the armies of Mali and Niger.

Abdel-Rahman Pasha, Senior Researcher at the African Affairs and Sustainable Development Unit, appreciated the efforts made by countries that are exposed to terrorism, which increased this month in conjunction with the increase in terrorist operations. "Pasha" stressed that these endeavors should not be limited to the security confrontation, but must include other aspects, ideological, economic and social.

It is worth noting that the continent of Africa comes within the interest of the Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights, as it is a member of the General Assembly in the Economic, Social and Cultural Council of the African Union, as well as the North Africa region coordinator in the group of major African NGOs affiliated to the high-level political forum of the United Nations.
