Maat concludes training for journalists on neutral handling of prisoners and their families' issues, and celebrates their mothers and wives
The Maat Center concluded this evening, March 20, 2008, training 30 journalists on methods of neutral handling of the issues of prisoners, detainees and their families, bringing the number of journalists who were trained within the Community Peace Project to 60 journalists.
A number of journalists belonging to the national, partisan, independent and regional newspapers participated in the training in six governorates, among them a number of TV programmers and presenters. The training witnessed the definition of international conventions on the rights of prisoners and detainees, and the role of human rights professionals in introducing society in all its classes to the issues of this marginalized group and supporting its role. In its rehabilitation and integration to ensure that its members are protected from any ideas encouraging violence that are generated within the children of prisoners and detainees as a result of their feeling of deprivation or societal isolation.
While the training witnessed the confirmation of Dr. Hanan Salem, a professor of political sociology, that 35 % wives and mothers of prisoners provide for their families while depriving them of all their social and human rights, and he called on the journalists to support the families of prisoners and detainees and strive to remove all societal barriers imposed on them, while emphasizing the rights of their members In obtaining social benefits that compensate for their deprivation of their breadwinner, through concerted governmental and civil efforts to prevent the increasing crime rates from escaping into society from among them.
The center, in cooperation with the United States Agency for International Development, will complete the training of 60 lawyers, during the month of April, to conclude the training of the target groups of the project, which are journalists, community leaders and lawyers, to move to direct mixing with the families of prisoners and detainees within the project to spread the culture of community peace and reject ideas of violence among them in six governorates: Cairo, Alexandria. , Dakahlia, Giza, Minya and Assiut. The days of peace between these families should be repeated in their governorates.
Yesterday evening, the Center organized a celebration for the mothers and wives of detainees and prisoners on the occasion of Mother’s Day and the Prophet’s birthday, and in a wonderful social scene, the problems of these families were identified and an attempt was made to participate with them in their celebrations of the distribution of sweets and in-kind assistance.
