On November 23, 2024, Maat for Peace, Development, and Human Rights conducted a training course for students at Faculty of Economics and Management, at the 6th of October University. This course aimed to enhance participants' understanding of Arms Trade Treaty (ATT), its monitoring mechanisms, advocacy strategies, and analysis of global arms trade trends. The training provided a comprehensive overview of the provisions of ATT, equipping participants with the skills necessary to monitor arms transfers and analyze trade trends. It also empowered them to advocate for the reduction of weapon proliferation and to address human rights violations associated with irresponsible arms sales.
The course detailed the obligations and implications for states that are parties to the ATT, focusing on capacity building to promote responsible arms trade and prevent illicit arms trafficking. Through this course, participants gained insights into the principles of responsible arms trade, as well as the effective implementation of prohibitions and obligations under international law concerning the transfer of conventional weapons that may destabilize regions or cause human suffering.
This initiative is part of Maat’s ongoing commitment to empowering youth and engaging them in global efforts to regulate international arms trade. Through a series of trainings and workshops, Maat aims to develop a new generation of advocates capable of making meaningful contributions to the promotion of peace and security.
