Maat Foundation Annual Report 2024

As 2024 comes to a close, we present this annual report, reflecting Maat's efforts to promote human rights, uphold the rule of law, and contribute to achieving sustainable development based on the principles of justice and equality. This year was filled with unprecedented challenges, yet also marked significant and impactful steps that reflect our unwavering commitment to the values of freedom and human dignity, despite the complexities of the legal and political landscape at the regional and international levels.

The past year witnessed an escalation of armed conflicts, worsening humanitarian crises, and increasing challenges facing civil society, making human rights work more complex. Despite this, Maat was able to maintain its active role, whether through implementing pivotal projects that addressed fundamental issues such as combating torture, countering media disinformation, and promoting sustainable development, or through its contributions to international forums. The foundation delivered more than 200 oral and written interventions and continued its close cooperation with the United Nations and regional mechanisms to enhance the protection of human rights.

Because real impact is not limited to international forums and official forums, but extends to communities themselves, Maat Foundation has paid special attention to capacity building and enhancing legal awareness. Throughout the year, the foundation organized 25 training workshops targeting youth, journalists, and lawyers, in addition to training refugees and migrants on legal protection mechanisms and launching community initiatives. It also worked to create a broad-based community dialogue through 46 events and discussion panels that addressed the most prominent current human rights issues, including human rights in armed conflicts, the impact of the arms trade on regional stability, the promotion of democracy, and the protection of the most vulnerable groups.

Amid the rapid transformations in the media and human rights landscape, Maat has recognized the importance of digital awareness as an effective tool in countering media misinformation and promoting fact-based human rights discourse. To this end, the organization launched six online campaigns focused on pressing human rights issues, including a campaign to reject Israel's presidency of the Conference on Disarmament, a "Check Before You Believe" campaign to counter fake news, and other initiatives that highlighted human rights violations in conflict zones.

This report not only reflects Maat's achievements in 2024, but also charts the path forward, affirming our unwavering commitment to continuing our work to protect rights and freedoms, expanding partnerships with civil society and international organizations, and addressing emerging challenges that threaten human rights gains in our world today.
