One in three Kenyans suffers from chronic food insecurity and malnutrition annually

14.5 million Kenyans suffer from food insecurity each year, meaning that more than four million people suffer from food shortages, according to the Kenya Institute of Public Policy Research Analysis.

Although Kenya has taken some steps to improve food security, it is among 43 countries suffering from food shortages. Kenya remains 86th out of 117 countries listed in the report Global Hunger Index.

Although the index decreased from 27.6 in 2010 to 25.2 in 2019, the future situation does not look good due to climate shocks and the current locust infestation on East Africa, which may raise its hunger index in the coming months.

Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights calls for more regional and international solidarity to help Kenya cope with these climate and biological changes, in order to help achieve the second goal of the sustainable development goals aimed at eliminating hunger.
