New workshop in the framework of the project of integrated protection for the families of the prisoners and detainees; to provide an access to the children of the prisoners and detainees to their right to education

Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights held its 1st workshop for education departments' officials, social affairs, school boards of trustees and NGOs representatives from the interested in improving the prisoners and detainees conditions in Atfeeh Center and the district of Helwan on the 18/19 of June 2012. The workshop is considered one of the activities of the project; integrated protection for the families of the prisoners and detainees "integration and rehabilitation", funded by the Swiss Foundation DROSOS and seeks to improve the living conditions of the prisoners and detainees in 6 districts in Giza and Cairo. The workshop discussed the regulating legal procedures for the families of the prisoners and detainees in order to receive aid to help them improving the educational conditions for their children and to prevent them from dropping out, along with mechanisms to activate those legal procedures through integral teamwork between the associated actors and institutions represented in the workshop. The workshop also discussed a package of regulating laws and ministerial decisions to the work of schools boards of trustees in regards with its significant role in mobilizing local society to provide integrated care for students in general, special needs and outstanding students in particular in order to improve their cultural, social, national and scientific standards, as well as, the regulating laws for the social affairs sector "where these families reception of social security subsidies and pensions is connected to their children's education 27 representative of education departments, social affairs, schools boards of trustees and NGOs of the previously mentioned districts participated in the workshop, the latter's recommendations would be followed up during the next period including; providing legal aid to the target families in order to facilitate their reception for their stated assistance in the Social Security Act through Maat Foundation and the participant NGOs, as well as, making a list of the problems that prevent the families with children in different stages of education from receiving the aid in order to present that list to the facilitation Committee during its next meeting to consider the possible help that could be provided by the members of the committee from their offices. Besides, the education departments would look into the possibility for the children of the prisoners and detainees to join group private lessons for free starting next year.
