During the final week of its 53rd session, the Human Rights Council held an urgent debate on “The Rising Acts of Religious Hatred and Their Link to the Burning of the Holy Quran.” During the debate, Maat for Peace, Development and Human Rights participated with an oral intervention, in which it emphasized that engaging in these practices under the pretext of freedom of opinion and expression contradicts the essence of human rights and the provisions of Article 20 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. It also drew attention to the fact that the legal framework in European countries is devoid of provisions criminalizing these practices under the pretext that they constitute a form of freedom of opinion and expression.
