Maat for Peace, Development, and Human Rights Association held the training course “Universal Periodic Review: Mechanisms of Action and Participation,” which was held from June 8 to 10, 2024, at Maat’s headquarters. The training course was attended by the members of the Egyptian Coalition for the Universal Periodic Review, in addition to a number of journalists, media professionals, and young Researchers. The training course included an introduction to international mechanisms for protecting human rights, the mechanism of the Universal Periodic Review was also explained and the stages of its process were followed, in addition to the role of civil society organizations in UPR process and how to write contributions, whether individual or joint, to the review mechanism.
The aim of the training course was to empower the members of the Egyptian coalition on UPR and provide them with the skills of writing reports submitted to the UPR mechanism. The training course included a number of practical activities in which members of the coalition drafted parts of the reports submitted to the universal periodic review mechanism.
Maat also concluded the training course with an activity in which the trainees presented a set of proposed activities to contribute to the implementation of the supported recommendations by the Egyptian Government in the 3rd periodic review. This training comes within the framework of Maat’s endeavor to build the capabilities of civil society organizations, enhance their awareness of international mechanisms for protecting human rights, and work to get them more involved in the UPR process in all its stages. It is worth noting that this training is part of the Maat’s activities in preparation for submitting a joint report on behalf of the Egyptian Coalition on the Universal Periodic Review regarding Egypt’s fourth review in January 2025.
