As part of its ongoing efforts to raise awareness of international humanitarian law and build the capacities of youth in conflict areas, Maat for Peace, Development, and Human Rights organized a virtual training workshop titled "Principles and Rules of International Humanitarian Law and Documenting Human Rights Violations." This event included the participation of a group of Sudanese youth and students, facilitated online by Khartoum Medical Students' Association (KMSA).
The workshop aimed to provide participants with a fundamental and comprehensive understanding of the nature, sources, and provisions of international humanitarian law, as well as mechanisms for documenting serious violations and war crimes occurring during armed conflicts.
During the workshop, Mohamed Mokhtar, Director of International Humanitarian Law Unit at Maat, presented a detailed overview of the sources of international humanitarian law, including the four Geneva Conventions of 1949, their additional protocols, and treaties that prohibit targeting civilians and the use of certain types of weapons. He also discussed the role of international customs, general principles of law, judicial decisions, and legal doctrines in developing this vital branch of international law.
This training comes amid escalating armed conflict in Sudan, accompanied by serious violations of international humanitarian law that may amount to crimes against humanity or genocide. This underscores the importance of building the capacity of youth to document these crimes and enhance accountability.
Maat reaffirms its commitment to supporting victims of conflicts, strengthening the capacities of local communities to monitor violations, and contributing to justice and accountability efforts at both national and international levels.
