Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights, as part of the activities of the Arab Week for Sustainable Development in its fourth edition, conducted a special session entitled “Towards supporting the achievement of sustainable development goals in countries affected by conflict in the Arab region”, which shed light on the challenges facing the achievement of the sustainable development goals in Arab conflict areas, and how these challenges can be eliminated.

in that framework; The session was opened by Hajar Monsef; Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights, noting that the conflicts that occur in the Arab countries are among the most prominent challenges that impede the achievement of sustainable development goals, and that we must unite to stop these conflicts. Monsef added that partnership between all actors is necessary to advance the deteriorating conditions of Arab countries.

As Ambassador Nada Al-Ajezi indicated; Director of Sustainable Development and International Cooperation in the League of Arab States, in her speech for the efforts made by the General Secretariat for Sustainable Development over the past three years and its policies that have made achieving peace and security in the Arab region a top priority. Arab conflict-affected, and its role in devising new methods and methods to achieve development in conflict-affected societies. She also commended the role of regional and international partners in the success of this subcommittee, especially during the COVID-19 period.

Dr. Wadid Arian pointed out; Senior Adviser for Sustainable Development at the League of Arab States, in his speech to the report on sustainable development in the Arab region, which addressed the challenges that the Arab region suffers from, related to trends, and the high numbers of displacement, which caused difficulty in drafting this report, and “Arian” recommended the need for cooperation and partnership. Between all sectors or ministries of the different Arab countries to achieve the 2030 development agenda.

As Nina Strowman notes; The regional emergency and post-crisis specialist from the International Organization for Migration, in her speech to the importance of human security and its achievement, and that it must be internal and international cooperation, and highlighted the importance of cooperation between governmental and international organizations to confront conflicts and conflicts, and she recommended the need to emphasize the elimination of conflicts wherever they exist, with cooperation Everyone and their initiative to confront risks at the subnational levels.

While Tariq Allami gave; The Director of the Emerging Issues and Conflicts Division at ESCWA gave an overview of the programs launched by ESCWA in the Arab conflict areas, stressing the axes of peace and development and their close connection, and briefly speaking about the sixteenth goal focusing on comprehensive justice and transparent institutions. He also referred to five methodologies followed by ESCWA in achieving its programmes, which were carried out in partnership with the United Nations Development Program. He recommended the necessity of exploiting the available opportunities and tools of mediation, reconciliation and national dialogue in order to achieve sustainable development in conflict areas.

As Rouhi Afghani pointed out; Program Adviser for Conflict Prevention and Peacebuilding at the Regional Center of the United Nations Development Program in Amman Bearing in mind that there are some issues that need an integrated approach, such as the issues of refugees and displaced persons. He recommended the importance of enhancing trust between governments and local communities for comprehensive development planning while building partnerships with civil society.

Ola Sidani crossed; Senior Economic Director of the Economic Unit in the Council of Ministers of Lebanon, reported on the country's low development situation at all political, economic and security levels, and highlighted the high rates of poverty in Lebanon as a result of the deterioration of these conditions and the collapse of education and health systems. She stressed the need to emphasize that achieving sustainable development goals must be placed at the top of the state's priorities to eliminate the fragility that Lebanon suffers from.

His Excellency Minister Dr. Abdullah Badheeb, Minister of Planning and International Cooperation of the Republic of Yemen, promised in his speech that the Yemeni experience in achieving sustainable development, which faced many challenges, and the most prominent thing it needs to rise again is to achieve peace. The Minister highlighted the many challenges facing Yemen related to food security, education, health, security and economic conditions. He recommended the necessity of addressing the humanitarian needs of the groups most affected by the conflict and encouraging the private sector and the local community to achieve development and infrastructure reconstruction.

It is worth noting that the Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights is a key partner of the League of Arab States in the Arab Week for Sustainable Development, which is currently being held in the Egyptian capital, Cairo. She is also a member of the Technical Secretariat of the Sub-Committee on Sustainable Development in the Arab Regions Affected by the Conflict, which was launched on the sidelines of the event.
