Maat conducts the 3rd workshop to improve the learning conditions of the children of prisoners and detainees, to activate their access to their educational rights

Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights conducted the 2nd workshop for education departments' officials, social affairs, school boards of trustees and NGOs representatives from the interested in improving the prisoners and detainees conditions in Al Khalifa, Al Basateen and Dar Al Salam districts on the 27/28 of June 2012. The workshop is considered one of the activities of the project; integrated protection for the families of the prisoners and detainees "integration and rehabilitation", funded by the Swiss Foundation DROSOS and seeks to improve the living conditions of the prisoners and detainees in 6 districts in Giza and Cairo. The workshop discussed the regulating legal procedures for the families of the prisoners and detainees in order to receive aid to help them improving the educational conditions for their children and to prevent them from dropping out, along with mechanisms to activate those legal procedures through integral teamwork between the associated actors and institutions represented in the workshop. The workshop also discussed a package of regulating laws and ministerial decisions to the work of schools boards of trustees in regards with its significant role in mobilizing local society to provide integrated care for students in general and special needs students in particular, as well as, the regulating laws for the social affairs sector "where these families reception of social security subsidies and pensions is connected to their children's education". 31 representative of education departments, social affairs, schools boards of trustees and NGOs of the previously mentioned districts participated in the workshop, the latter's recommendations would be followed up during the next period including; the necessity to work together to activate the role of the school's psychological specialist and social worker in order to rehabilitate the children of the prisoners and detainees psychologically, to build up normal personalities to interact with their communities, recognizing the outstanding students in their schools in the target areas, along with facilitating their liaison with school administrations, which requires an integrative effort from the workshop participants concerning providing training opportunities for social workers to perform that job. The participant agreed on providing medical care for the children of prisoners and detainees by NGOs, Masr El Mahrousa Association would commit to perform that role, Alashanek Ya Baladi Association and Resala would provide school supplies and group private lessons.
