Maat issues a report on the crisis of displaced persons camps in Syria

Akil: The displaced in the camps suffer from difficult humanitarian conditions ... and the international community must join hands to prevent a new generation of ISIS.

The founder of Maat for Peace, Development and Human Rights released today, March 23, 2020 a report entitled “Death camps ... the displaced Syrians between a bitter reality and an international helplessness”, which dealt with the crisis of the displaced persons camps in Syria since the beginning of the civil war in 2011, and the report indicated that there are about 5.6 million people who have been forced To cross the borders to Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey, while 6.6 million others have spread as displaced inside Syria. Many of them reside in makeshift camps that are exposed to dangers or what we might call "death camps" due to their lack of the simplest and decent livelihoods, and their lack of infrastructure such as roads and sanitation networks.

The report added that these camps lack health care and malnutrition resulting from the lack of foodstuffs and the lack of safe drinking water, in addition to the lack of basic facilities necessary for the continuation of life and the lack of preparations to cope with climate fluctuations, which leads to the death of many people due to the intense heat in the summer or From the harsh cold and rain in the winter season, this is in addition to the spread of diseases and epidemics with the presence of dangerous intellectual elements represented by women fighters of terrorist organizations, which are working to raise extremist ideas inside the camps and instill them in the mentality of young children, which represents the spread of extremist and dangerous ideas that pose a threat to security National states for the future.

The report emphasized that despite international efforts to protect refugees, there is a lack of dealing with the refugee and displaced crisis, and thus there is a need for international and regional arrangements to deal with the repercussions of this crisis. The current system is unable to meet the great challenges presented by the various conflicts in the Middle East, due to its huge size and wide scope. The absence of international participation in bearing the burdens and responsibility has resulted in the neighboring countries, such as Lebanon and Jordan, bearing a disproportionate share of the burden of caring for the largest number of refugees. Vulnerable refugees have been left in increasingly precarious situations due to the non-binding nature of international mechanisms for refugee protection and the lack of enforcement of procedures to guarantee the rights of refugees and displaced persons.

For his part, Ayman Aqil, head of the Maat Foundation, said that despite the efforts of humanitarian and relief organizations to provide the basic needs of refugees and displaced persons in the camps, they are still suffering from tragic and difficult conditions, as they are at risk of death due to climate fluctuations, malnutrition or lack of medical care, and Aqil called on the international community. The need to join hands in order to provide aid to the refugees and the displaced inside these camps and provide them with psychological and social rehabilitation, before these camps turn into terrorist hotbeds and fertile lands to produce a new generation of ISIS terrorists.
