Ayman Aqeel: There must be an end to the ethnic fighting in Sudan and South Sudan

Basant Essam: Measures must be taken to stop the progress of terrorism in southern Africa

The Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights issued its monthly report on the most prominent terrorist operations and counter-terrorism efforts in the African continent for the month of August 2020, to track the path of terrorist groups and come up with recommendations and assessments of the current and future security situation in the African continent.

The report dealt with the details of the most prominent of those operations that took place during the past month of August, in each of the five regions of the continent, and which occurred in 14 African countries, with 41 terrorist attacks; It caused the death of at least 556 people, while the Boko Haram group was behind the dropping of the largest number of victims, while the ethnic fighting was behind the fall of the largest number of victims at once.

The report stated that the region most affected is East Africa, which lost 241 victims, with a rate of 43.35% of the percentage of victims of the month, after 17 terrorist operations in 3 countries. Nigeria is at the forefront of countries where there were victims, with 154 victims, after 8 terrorist operations. Somalia was subjected to the largest number of terrorist operations after the notable activity of Al-Shabaab movement, with 12 terrorist operations this month. While the State of Egypt came at the forefront of the countries that were able to bring down the largest number of terrorist elements, when it reached 77 terrorist elements.

Ayman Aqeel stated; The head of the Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights, that the time has come to put an end to ethnic fighting in Africa, especially in the countries of Sudan and South Sudan, and governments must assume their responsibility in this regard by defusing interethnic quarrels.

Aqeel recommended the governments of Sudan and South Sudan to the necessity of developing tight national plans to stop the ethnic fighting in the country as a way to stop the bloodshed that has not stopped yet, threatening all peace gains in previous years.

Basant Essam warned: The researcher in the African Affairs and Sustainable Development Unit at the Maat Foundation, from the eyes of terrorism in recent years to the south of the continent, and the spread and expansion of terrorist groups, after this region was immune from the terrorist events that take place in other regions.

The researcher recommended that the governments of southern African countries take all necessary measures to curb this rapid spread of jihadists, especially after the incident of controlling a major port in northern Mozambique.

It is worth noting that the continent of Africa comes within the interest of the Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights, as it is a member of the General Assembly in the Economic, Social and Cultural Council of the African Union, as well as the North Africa region coordinator in the group of major African NGOs affiliated to the high-level political forum of the United Nations.
