Maat participates in Consultation Fourth on the protection of civilians in urban warfare

Towards a political declaration to address the humanitarian harm arising from the use of explosive weapons in populated areas

 Maat’s delegation participated in the political declaration consultations on the use of explosive weapons in populated areas. The consultations were suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic more than two years ago. More than 200 participants representing international, regional and civil society organizations, including more than 65 government representatives, parliamentarians, and diplomatic missions in Geneva, participated in the fourth round of consultation.

Maat’s delegation indicated that the participation in the call for a strong political declaration was timely, because to this day, international humanitarian law is clearly and publicly violated, and every country that has been involved in conflicts over the past decade claims to be in full compliance with international humanitarian law.

Maat also stressed the necessity and importance of international cooperation, specifically with civil society organizations. Maat’s delegation called for the need to allow civil society organizations in the Arab region to participate in future discussions, as this will enhance the effectiveness of achieving common goals. Maat also emphasized the importance of youth participation in promoting that document and acknowledged the great importance of the participation of young people in the promotion and implementation of international humanitarian law, on the sidelines of the training and activities that raised the capabilities of more than 100 young men and girls in areas affected by armed conflicts.
