Commenting on the report of the Special Rapporteur on prisons, conditions of detention and the police in #AFRICAOn the sidelines of its participation in the work of the 77th session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights in the city #arocha # Tanzania. Maat made an oral intervention and expressed her concern about the appalling prison and detention conditions in Africa, and the use of force at the national level which remains a challenge. Maat called on the special mechanism of the African Commission on Prisons to coordinate with the countries that most practice violence inside prisons to develop alternatives to imprisonment and implement other measures aimed at reducing overcrowding, torture, and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment in prisons and other places of detention.
