Maat indicated that during the fourth periodic review session, Bahrain received 245 recommendations on improving human rights and freedoms. Maat commended the efforts made by the State of Bahrain to implement some of the recommendations it accepted during the third review session, especially in terms of combating human trafficking and ratifying international human rights conventions. However, it was concerned about the Bahraini government's failure to implement all recommendations during the third periodic review session, especially the right to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and association, and protection from discrimination, torture, and ill-treatment.
In light of the above, Maat renewed its call to the Bahraini government to guarantee freedom of expression, association, and peaceful assembly for all citizens, to release journalists, and to address discrimination and ill-treatment of marginalized and vulnerable groups and urged the Bahraini government to work closely with civil society to implement the recommendations made during the UPR.
