Ayman Okeil, the International human rights expert and president of Maat for Peace, Development and Human Rights, participated in an international campaign that included many human rights experts from around the world demanding the Taliban to reopen schools for girls after the central Taliban government brought in a de facto ban on high school education for girls in wake of their control of the capital Kabul in August 2021
The speech, broadcast by Afghanistan International Agency, goes as "I talk to you here from Cairo, the capital of Islamic culture and the heart of Islam, and Egypt, the country of Al-Azhar and the beacon of Islam in the world, has repeatedly emphasized the right of girls to education and stressed the lack of resources in the Islamic law or any divine law that prevents girls from enjoying their right to education as the Taliban are doing right now.”
The human rights expert emphasized that what the de facto “Taliban” authorities are doing now in Afghanistan is in violation of Islamic law and that depriving girls of the right to education for nearly 7 months (209 days) is an attack on basic human rights, which is the right to education.
Okeil also added that girls' failure to return to school may lead to many negative phenomena, such as the spread of illiteracy among girls in Afghanistan, unwanted early pregnancies, and forced labor for children and girls in particular.
All of these negative effects are due to the de facto authorities in Afghanistan, the Taliban, and the violation of the right of girls to education and access to schools. It is clear that the Taliban movement insists on not considering this decision, and the evidence is the recent assault on women who demonstrated in order to demand access to their right to education.
Okeil also called on the international community to stand by these girls to achieve their right to education and to put pressure on the de facto authority in Afghanistan to withdraw this decision and force them to allow girls to return to schooling.
Okeil concluded his speech with a message to the de facto authority in Afghanistan, “from Egypt, the country of Islam and Al-Azhar Al-Sharif, we appeal to you to Let Afghan Girls Learn.”
