The role of the Human Rights Council in implementing the sustainable development goals

Submitted to: Human Rights Council, 38th session.

Concerning: Item 10: Report of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights on support to United Nations human rights mechanisms and United Nations country teams of states in implementing the 2030 Agenda (Human Rights Council Resolution 36/28)

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in its entirety includes references to human rights with an explicit recognition that implementation must remain consistent with relevant international rules and obligations and contribute to their realization. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals and their 169 targets reflect human rights standards, directly or indirectly, and incorporate into them comprehensive human rights principles such as participation, accountability and non-discrimination, taking into account the specific challenges and circumstances of each country. Thus, the 2030 Sustainable Development Plan will have a major impact on the enjoyment of human rights. By everyone in all countries of the world if implemented properly.
