Maat: Terrorist and violent operations killed 883 people in Africa during December2021

Maat for Peace, Development and Human Rights stated that, during December 2021, at least 883 people have been killed in Africa. East Africa was the worst affected by terrorist operations and acts of violence and recorded the highest rate of mortality, with 495 deaths and 33 terrorist and violent attacks.
This was detailed in in a report issued by Maat for Peace, Development and Human Rights on the most prominent terrorist operations and counter-terrorism efforts in Africa for December 2021, to track the path of terrorist groups, and to come up with recommendations and estimates of the current and future security situation in Africa.
The report highlighted that East Africa was the most affected region for this month with 495 deaths and 33 terrorist attacks, mainly due to the disturbing security and political conditions in the last month in Sudan, in addition to the continuation of the Tigray civil war in Ethiopia. West Africa comes second in terms of terrorist operations, as Boko Haram attacks in Nigeria and Niger have affected the increase in the number of victims, whose number in the west of the continent has reached 252 dead and 12 terrorist attacks.
The International human rights expert, Ayman Okeil, President of Maat for Peace, Development and Human Rights, expressed his concern about the deteriorating humanitarian situation in East Africa, especially in light of the alarming current security situation in Ethiopia and Sudan, where violence and riots have increased, and fighting has intensified. Okeil stressed the need to provide technical support from international and regional bodies, including the special procedures of the United Nations and the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights, to improve the human rights and humanitarian situation in East Africa.
For her part, Mariam Salah, a researcher at the African Affairs and Sustainable Development Unit at Maat, pointed out that the spread of terrorist religious groups comes in light of the misunderstood religious beliefs by young people. Accordingly, the researcher recommended activating the role of moderate religious institutions to educate peoples, especially the youth who are the most vulnerable to these extremist ideas, about the phenomenon of terrorism in the name of religion.
Notably, Africa is among the issues of concern to Maat for Peace, Development and Human rights, being a member of the General Assembly for the Economic, Social & Cultural Council (ECOSOCC) of the Africa Union (AU). Moreover, Maat serves as an Observer in The African Commission on Human and People’s Rights (ACHPR) and as a Northern African Coordinator in the major Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in Africa of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA).
