During its participation in the 52nd session of the Human Rights Council, Maat Foundation monitored the adoption of the outcome of Tunisia's Universal Periodic Review under Item 6. Maat commended Tunisia's efforts to implement some of the recommendations it accepted during the last review session, particularly regarding addressing gender inequality, promoting women's rights, and ratifying international human rights instruments. However, Maat Foundation remains deeply concerned about recent measures taken by the Tunisian authorities that have hindered the important steps the country has taken towards democracy and the promotion of human rights.
Maat recommends that the Tunisian government guarantee freedom of expression, association, and peaceful assembly for all citizens, and release all detained activists, journalists, and protesters. The organization also urges the Tunisian government to work closely with civil society to implement the recommendations presented to it during the current periodic review.
