Religion in Africa is a driver of reality - not only cultural and social, but often political and economic. Africa includes two types of religions: They are: traditional religions, and foreign religions that include a large religious group. Practitioners of traditional religions are distributed in particular in sub-Saharan Africa among 43 countries, and their number is estimated at about 70 to 100 million people, or 12% of the population of Africa, while the largest religions in Africa are Christianity 45% and Islam is practiced by 40% of Africans.

Article 8 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights states that “freedom of belief and the practice of religious rites shall be guaranteed, and no one shall be subjected to measures restricting the exercise of these freedoms, subject to law and public order”.

Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights believes that this momentum and diversity in religions - enumeration, interaction and influence - requires a great deal of acceptance of the other and constructive dialogue based on accepting the ideological difference, and avoiding igniting the fuse of sedition by all means. The Foundation calls for activating the role of civil and religious society, as well as official institutions, towards a comprehensive consolidation of that culture.
