Maat Foundation Annual Report 2024

As we conclude the year 2024, we present this annual report, which reflects the efforts of Maat for Peace, Development, and Human Rights (Maat) in promoting human rights, upholding the rule of law, and contributing to the achievement of sustainable development based on the principles of justice and equality. This year was filled with unprecedented challenges, yet it also witnessed significant and impactful steps that reflect our unwavering commitment to the values of freedom and human dignity, despite the complexities of the human rights and political landscape at both regional and international levels.

The past year witnessed an escalation of armed conflicts, a worsening of humanitarian crises, and increased challenges for civil society, making human rights work more complex. Despite this, Maat was able to continue its active role, whether through the implementation of pivotal projects addressing core issues such as combating torture, countering disinformation, and promoting sustainable development, or through contributing to international forums. Maat submitted over 200 written and oral statements and continued its close cooperation with the United Nations and regional mechanisms to enhance the protection of human rights.

Recognizing that real impact extends beyond international arenas and official forums to the communities themselves, Maat paid special attention to capacity building and promoting human rights awareness. Throughout the year, Maat organized 25 training workshops targeting youth, journalists, and lawyers, in addition to training refugees and migrants on legal protection mechanisms and launching community initiatives. It also worked to create a broad-based community dialogue through 46 events and panel discussions addressing the most pressing human rights issues, including human rights in armed conflict, the impact of the arms trade on regional stability, and promoting democracy and protecting the most vulnerable groups.

In light of the rapid transformations in the media and human rights landscape, Maat recognized the importance of digital awareness as an effective tool in countering disinformation and promoting a fact-based human rights discourse. To this end, Maat launched six online campaigns focusing on pressing human rights issues, including the campaign against Israel's presidency of the Conference on Disarmament, the "Seek Proof, Then Belief" campaign to counter fake news, and other initiatives highlighting human rights violations in conflict zones.

This report reflects not only what Maat has accomplished during 2024, but also outlines the path towards the future, reaffirming our steadfast commitment to continue working to protect rights and freedoms, expand partnerships with civil society and international organizations, and address emerging challenges that threaten the gains of human rights in our world today.
