As part of its ongoing efforts to raise awareness of international humanitarian law and build the capacity of youth in conflict zones, the Maat Foundation for Peace, Development, and Human Rights organized a virtual training workshop titled "Principles and Rules of International Humanitarian Law and Documenting Human Rights Violations." The workshop was attended by a group of Sudanese youth and students via a virtual online application, at the invitation of the University of Khartoum Medical Students Association.
The workshop aimed to provide participants with basic and comprehensive knowledge about the nature, sources and provisions of international humanitarian law, in addition to mechanisms for documenting serious violations and war crimes that occur during armed conflicts.
During the workshop, Mohamed Mukhtar, Director of the International Humanitarian Law Unit at Maat Foundation, gave a detailed presentation on the sources of international humanitarian law, most notably the four Geneva Conventions of 1949, their Additional Protocols, and treaties prohibiting the targeting of civilians and the use of certain types of weapons. He also addressed the role of international norms, general principles of law, judicial decisions, and legal doctrines in developing this vital branch of international law.
This training comes amid the escalating armed conflict in Sudan and the accompanying serious violations of international humanitarian law, which may amount to crimes against humanity or genocide. This underscores the importance of building youth capacity to document these crimes and promote accountability.
Maat Foundation affirms its commitment to supporting victims of conflict, strengthening the capacity of local communities to monitor violations, and contributing to justice and accountability efforts at the national and international levels.
