As part of its efforts to promote awareness of international humanitarian law, Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights, in cooperation with the International Consulting Group for Training and Law, organized a training workshop entitled “Principles and Rules of International Humanitarian Law” at the headquarters of the International Consulting Group. The workshop targeted youth and sought to provide participants with a deep understanding of the nature and sources of international humanitarian law, in addition to mechanisms for documenting serious violations and war crimes during armed conflicts.

The training provided a detailed explanation of the essence of international humanitarian law, its most prominent principles, and the history of its development, while clarifying the fundamental differences between it and international human rights law.

The training also reviewed the basic sources of international humanitarian law, primarily international treaties, such as the four Geneva Conventions of 1949, which prohibit the targeting of civilians and civilian objects during armed conflicts, in addition to agreements regulating the use of various means of warfare. It also addressed international norms, general principles of law, case law, and legal doctrines as complementary elements to the framework of international humanitarian law.

This training comes within the activities of the Maat Foundation project “Guardians of Humanity: Towards a New Generation of Defenders of the Implementation of International Humanitarian Law in the Arab Region”, which aims to empower a new generation of youth to defend the principles of international humanitarian law and enhance compliance by states and non-state actors with these rules in the Arab region.
