Eritrea between its breakthrough externally and an internal violation of human rights <\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

Aqeel, the human rights situation deteriorated in Eritrea <\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

In her intervention in the interactive poplar with the Eritrean Human Rights Commission, the Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights confirmed that Eritrea had witnessed developments during the previous period, including the election of Eritrea as a member of the Human Rights Council, as well as the Security Council\u2019s decision to lift the sanctions imposed on Eritrea.<\/p>\n

Despite this breakthrough externally, there are still observations about the internal closed human rights environment where Eritreans still face human rights problems such as the poor conditions of refugees and migrants, as thousands of Eritreans face serious human rights violations during their exit from the country in the countries of transit and destination, and Eritreans are also at risk of arbitrary detention. Kidnapping, sexual assault and ill-treatment on their way to Europe.<\/p>\n

High death rates, especially in early childhood, due to poor health and nutritional conditions. More people are leaving drought-affected areas due to the acute water shortage problem. Also, Eritreans suffer from corruption of all kinds<\/p>\n

Women face difficult circumstances, especially with their forced conscription. She is exposed to sexual and physical violence and reports indicate that girls are forced into marriage at a young age in order to avoid conscription.<\/p>\n

The Foundation demanded the opening of the public political sphere, and an end to the repression of journalists and media professionals, with the release of peaceful dissidents and the opening of the way for the formation of civil societies, and allowing international organizations to carry out their work inside the country, and for the government to remove its hand from trade unions.<\/p>\n

At the conclusion of his intervention, Aqeel presented a set of recommendations to the Eritrean government:<\/p>\n

  • Allow international organizations and their representatives to conduct more country visits to Eritrea<\/li>\n
  • Work to develop a strategy for the return of migrants who suffer in the countries of transit and destination, raise their capabilities, skills, and qualify them to return to their countries and help build state institutions<\/li>\n
  • Opening the public political sphere, and stopping the suppression of journalists and media professionals, while releasing peaceful dissidents and opening the way for the formation of civil societies<\/li>\n
