Maat: During November, Africa lost at least 748 people due to terrorism and violence

“Okeil”: Ethnic fighting is alarmingly raging and expanding in Ethiopia

“Essam”: We encourage relevant regional organizations to establish counter-terrorism centers in the five African regions.

Maat For peace, development and human rights reported that the continent of Africa lost, during November 2021, at least 748 people Africa, due to the increased murders committed by the Ethiopian federal government for the following month in a row. Compared to last month, October 2021, 559 persons were killed in Africa as a result of internal unrest and violent actions. This urges for the need to increase regional and international efforts to ease the Ethiopian resentment, in addition to the importance of drying up the sources of terrorism so that the time will come when we stop reaping the victims of terrorist attacks.

This was showed in a report issued by Maat for Peace, Development and Human Rights on the most prominent terrorist operations and counter-terrorism efforts in Africa for November 2021, to track the path of terrorist groups, and to come up with recommendations and estimates of the current and future security situation in Africa.

The report stated that the most affected region for this month is East Africa, where about 399 killings occurred due to the continuing fighting in Ethiopia, followed by West Africa, where 266 persons were killed, due to the successive attacks of Boko Haram in Nigeria, Niger, and Burkina Faso, witnessed in this month a significant increase in the number of victims of terrorist operations.

The International human rights expert, Ayman Okeil, head of Maat for Peace, Development and Human Rights, warned of an imminent humanitarian catastrophe that threatens East Africa, specifically Ethiopia, especially in light of the expansion of the war and the continuation of armed formations there that are facing the acts of violence practiced by the Ethiopian government. Okeil reiterated the need to support the national dialogue that would end the state of internal war in Ethiopia in a manner that preserves the rights of the different ethnicities within the country.

Bassant Essam El Din: Head of the Research Team at the African Affairs and Sustainable Development Unit at Maat, explained that terrorism is a national issue. Essam recommended the need for encouraging the relevant regional organizations to establish mechanisms or centers to combat terrorism or to strengthen the existing ones, at least in the five regions, until the mechanism is activated in all African countries suffering from terrorism.

Notably, Africa is among the issues of concern to Maat for Peace, Development and Human rights, being a member of the General Assembly for the Economic, Social & Cultural Council (ECOSOCC) of the Africa Union (AU). Moreover, Maat serves as an Observer in The African Commission on Human and People’s Rights (ACHPR) and as a Northern African Coordinator in the major Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in Africa of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA).
